Le vague à l'âme

This project is a journey into the essence of melancholy.

I was looking for a suitable form of an expression to capture its intangible frame of mind.

Even though there are many meanings, for me, melancholy represents mysticism, something you cannot explain. It is a state of presence and absence at once, of isolation and harmony, sadness and felicity. Therefore, I used candles for lighting and small flashlights to create an atmospheric mood light. While the interaction of soft candlelight and hart flashlight underscores the dialectic of melancholy, the shadow play and different superimposed structures stand for the enigmatic.
